Spawners cannot be obtained in Survival, fifty-fifty with Silk Touch.
In Boulder Edition, a monster spawner can be obtained in Creative way past taking it from creative inventory, past using the /give
command, or by using pick block. Information technology is initially empty and inert, but can be configured to spawn a desired mob by using a spawn egg on the placed block.
In Java Edition, spawners are not institute in the creative inventory[1] and are the only block with an detail form that cannot be obtained by pick block. The only mode to obtain one is by using the /give
command, which gives a pig spawner by default; afterward the mob can be changed by using a spawn egg on the placed block.
A /setblock
, /clone
or /fill
control tin also be used to obtain a spawner.
Breaking
If cleaved with a pickaxe, a spawner drops 15-43 experience. When mined with anything else, information technology drops nothing.

Natural generation
Spawners tin generate naturally in the post-obit places:
- Dungeons
- One in the heart of the dungeon spawning ane of the post-obit mobs with the indicated frequency: zombie (fifty%), skeleton (25%), or spider (25%).
- Mineshafts
- Any number of cave spider spawners, densely surrounded by cobwebs, scattered throughout.
- Woodland mansions
- Optionally one spider spawner, densely surrounded by cobwebs, in a rarely generated hugger-mugger room on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Information technology is sometimes visible through the windows from outside.
- Strongholds
- 1 silverfish spawner in the end portal room.
- Nether fortresses
- Ane or two blaze spawners on fenced platforms with full-cake "stairs" leading up to them. Commonly 2 are generated per fortress, just there tin can be fewer.
- Bastion remnants
- One magma cube spawner hanging from a chain underneath a span in treasure rooms.
The spawner spawns mobs in a 9×iii×9 volume (see § Mechanics) effectually it when the player is within sixteen blocks. Suitable spawning locations for the cake's mob type are provided in or around the spawning volume. The spawner attempts to spawn four mobs around it, and so waits from ten to 39.95 seconds before spawning more.
In Peaceful difficulty, spawners nevertheless activate but practise not spawn monsters in Bedrock Edition. In Java Edition, zombified piglins, magma cubes, and ghasts do non spawn at all and other hostile mobs disappear immediately after spawning.
Spawners are transparent, but they bear like leaves in that they lengthened heaven light coming from directly above.
In Bedrock Edition, they have a hitbox slightly smaller than a full block, and therefore, one tin walk on the edge of a supporting full block directly below the spawner.
Mechanics
A spawner activates when a player comes within a spherical radius of 16 blocks from the center point of the cake; i.eastward. fifteen.v blocks from the spawner itself. In Java Edition an agile spawner attempts to spawn mobs inside a iv-block horizontal and i-block vertical range; that is, in a nine×3×9 volume centered on the spawner. In Bedrock Edition, the horizontal spawning range is four blocks taxicab distance, creating spawning volume extending 4 blocks in each cardinal horizontal direction from the sides of the spawner; its horizontal cross-department is therefore diamond-shaped. Mobs can spawn anywhere in this range that is suitable, with mobs more likely to spawn closer to the spawner than farther away.
While mobs are spawned at fractional ten and z-coordinates (i.e. not aligned to blocks), they are spawned at an integer y-coordinate. Horizontally, a mob tin can spawn with its center point anywhere within range, just vertically, mobs spawn with their legs at either the same layer as the spawner cake, 1 block above it, or ane cake beneath it.
The spawner attempts to spawn 4 mobs at randomly chosen points within the spawning book, then await anywhere from 200 to 799 ticks (ten to 39.95 seconds) earlier spawning again. As it waits, the mob within the block spins faster and faster. Except for spawning on a solid block, all of the usual requirements for spawning must be met (not in a solid block, correct light level, etc.), and then the spawner oftentimes produces fewer than iv mobs. When it does spawn, it emits a "poof", and more than flame particles temporarily announced around information technology. If the spawner fails to spawn any mobs because information technology did non pick any suitable locations, it repeats this process every tick until it succeeds. It starts waiting for the side by side cycle after information technology spawns at to the lowest degree one mob. If, at the time of spawning, 6 or more mobs of the spawner's type are nowadays inside a 9×nine×nine volume centered on the spawner block (in Coffee Edition) or a sixteen×ten×16 volume centered on the lower northwest corner of the spawner block (in Bedrock Edition), the spawner "poofs" without creating whatever mobs then waits for the next cycle.
Spawning requirements
The spawner performs a relaxed version of the ordinary spawning check: the general solid cake requirement is removed, only the volume (hitbox of the mob), the light level, and other checks are kept. As a result, for some types of mobs to spawn in the outer planes of the spawning volume, some planes outside the volume may likewise need to be costless of opaque blocks to conform with the mobs' height, width, or other rules governing their individual spawn volumes. For instance, for mobs that are two or more blocks alpine such as zombies, skeletons, or blazes to spawn in the top y-layer, the layer in a higher place that must contain but air.
Mob blazon | Required Book | Failure charge per unit from 8×4×8 volume[note i] | Vertical alignment | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Hog [note ii] | eight.ix × 2.9 × viii.9 | two.531252% | | |||||
Cave Spider | 8.seven × ii.v × 8.7 | one.531252% | | |||||
Silverfish | 8.iii × 2.7 × 8.iii | 0.28125% | | |||||
Zombie Skeleton Blaze | eight.6 × 3.viii × 8.6 | ane.125% | | |||||
Spider | ix.4 × 2.9 × 9.4 | six.125% | | |||||
Magma Cube | 10.05× iv.09 × 10.05 | ?% | |
- ↑ viii×3×8 is the actual volume beyond which spawners spawn entities, but this volume contains only the entity's center. The failure rate assumes 8×four×8 because information technology is a popular misconception that 8×iv×eight is the maximum efficiency volume of empty space for mob spawners - it actually depends on the size of the entities themselves. Note that 10×four×ten is guaranteed to suit all of the higher up mobs. Also notation that this failure charge per unit accounts only for failures due to attempting to spawn a mob at the edges of the spawn range, not other causes of failure such as mobs attempting to spawn intersecting the spawner block itself.
- ↑ Pig spawners practise non appear naturally in vanilla Minecraft.
For all of the volumes listed in the table, the horizontal aeroplane is centered on the heart of the spawner block. While the spawning volume for pigs is 8.9×two.9×eight.9, the requirement of grass blocks that are necessary for pigs to spawn reduces the actual book in which they successfully spawn to 8.9×1.0×8.9. Other mobs can spawn in mid-air, ignoring general rules about spawning on solid basis.
The spawn conditions practice non include biomes for about mobs. As such, spawners can identify mobs where they normally wouldn't generate. For example, a mooshroom spawner can operate in a plains biome as long as there are mycelium blocks within the spawn surface area because the mooshroom'due south spawning lawmaking checks only for mycelium. The reason mooshrooms are non actually spawned elsewhere is that the game does not normally effort to spawn them in other biomes: but the mushroom field biome has mooshroom on the list of things to spawn.
Disabling
The mode a spawner can be disabled depends on the entity it tries to spawn.
For a spawner that generates mobs that spawn only in dark conditions (light level = 0), a torch placed on any side or top of the spawner is sufficient to disable it for the whole nine×9×3 volume.
For a blaze or silverfish spawner, a light level of 12 is required to prevent spawning. This tin be achieved by:
- Laying 9 blocks in the pattern shown on the right using blocks having a luminance value of 15
- Laying a dumbo 7×vii grid of torches on the spawner'south Y level
- In Boulder Edition, placing a light source of level 15 on four surfaces
A spawner is also disabled by filling the spawning volume with solid blocks. This is often used to disable magma cube spawners, every bit magma cubes can spawn in whatsoever calorie-free level. However, since all magma cubes require the space of a large magma cube in order to spawn, a clever placement of as piffling every bit ix solid blocks a layer in a higher place the spawner (see right prototype) can completely disable it.
Custom spawners
Using commands, spawners can be customized:
- They can exist made to spawn whatever kind of entity.
- A unmarried spawner tin spawn multiple different entities, chosen at random from a list.
- Properties can be set on the spawned entities.
- Various range and timing properties of the spawner can be changed.
Detailed technical data about custom spawners tin exist found beneath.
Note blocks
Spawner tin be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sounds.
Piston interactivity
Spawners cannot be pushed by pistons. They also cannot exist pushed nor pulled by glutinous pistons.

Issues relating to "Spawner" are maintained on the problems tracker. Written report issues there.
- Whatever spawner placed in Java Edition defaults equally a hog spawner.
- A actor-created spawner containing zombies can never spawn a Zombie Villager.[ more data needed ]
- In Java Edition, spawners containing zombies have a small chance to spawn a chicken jockey.
- In that location are no such affair as atomic number 26 golem spawners or snow golem spawners.
- Spawners containing zombies or skeletons have a take chances for the mob spinning within to accept armor.
- Spawners containing spiders have a modest chance to spawn a spider jockey.
- Spawners containing Pillagers have a pocket-size chance for the mob spinning inside to exist a Raid captain in Coffee Edition.
- Spawners in mushroom fields, mushroom field shore, or the Void biome tin office normally, despite those biomes having no hostile mobs spawn naturally.
- Spawners are the only cake that tin can exist legitimately obtained as an item, but not obtainable from either Creative mode or option block.[ Java Edition only ]
- It is possible for a pig spawner to generate naturally. If a newer earth is loaded in an older version of minecraft, the spawner can lose its metadata, causing it to enter its default state, which is pig. Alternatively, if a buried treasure chest generates next to a spawner, it duplicates the spawner without duplicating the NBT tag, resulting in a natural pig spawner. The chest also gets invalid block(spawner)data, making it unopenable.
- If a dungeon spawner overwrites a dungeon chest during world generation, the spawner does not spawn whatever mobs. It appears equally a pig spawner, merely placing a hopper underneath information technology reveals the contents of the chest that should have been in that location.
